I once overheard these guys making a battle plan. Offspring and spouses will be better suited for this.
You really shouldn’t grab these guys up unless you really want a specific companion to lead another army in your empire.
Personally I see no use for them other than party leaders. Tacticians do good at auto resolve battles as well as giving bonuses to troop morale, and debuffs to enemy morale.
